Virtual Cinema Platform Development for Nordic Film Teams

Updated

Choosing a film should lead to the intended viewing experience: the right edition, working captions and a clear access state. If the programme includes hosted screenings, the audience also needs to know whether the room is waiting, admitting viewers, active or ended.

Curiosive can build virtual-cinema platforms for documentary publishers and film organisations serving Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The scope can connect the audience application, video and caption editions, access rules and, where needed, hosted screening rooms. Start with one viewing journey and the people responsible for operating it.

Choose the first viewing mode

Decide whether the initial release is on-demand, hosted or both. Map discovery, viewing terms, admission and playback for that mode. Identify the approved film edition and the owner of its description, artwork and captions. A solo viewing product does not need every live-room capability; a hosted programme needs an operating plan as well as a player.

Published reference: Inspire Film's connected streaming product

Inspire Film, recorded in Spain, is a React and TypeScript application on Supabase and PostgreSQL. The published case describes adaptive film and course-video playback with captions through Bunny Stream, LiveKit screenings and events, memberships, Stripe checkout and administration. It also includes guided experiences with solo and host-led modes. This establishes connected streaming-product delivery. The access and recovery rules below are proposed scope, not claims about historical tests, distribution rights or guaranteed protection against copying.

Keep the film edition and captions together

Associate each playable edition with its video source and caption tracks. Define what a replacement means for saved links and scheduled screenings. A caption label must describe what the player actually loads; review selecting a track and the fallback when it is unavailable. For audiences across Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, choose the subtitle and interface languages your content team can supply. A translated menu does not create a corresponding film track.

Apply access at the playback destination

The content owner supplies the allowed audience, viewing window and policy for access changes. Agree how the catalogue, account system and media provider enforce that policy, including a saved player destination opened after access ends. Hiding a play button alone is insufficient. Any territorial restrictions or protection features need assessment against the actual provider and rights-owner requirements; do not assume that an implementation can prevent all copying.

Define the room states if screenings are hosted

Specify waiting, admission, active and ended states, plus delayed and rescheduled events. A late or reconnecting viewer should reach the intended current room state. If a guided segment is included, identify the step controlled by the host and the responses that remain individual. This does not by itself imply synchronised film position. Keep event times and the entry destination consistent with the programme page.

Agree who handles playback and event-day problems

Name the supported devices and browsers, then rehearse the actual media provider and caption controls. Identify who investigates unavailable video, failed admission and a host who cannot reconnect. Engineering maintenance, media hosting and live event operation are different responsibilities. Provider limitations should be visible in the support plan before an audience is invited.

Prepare a rehearsal with the operating owners

Use the worksheet to select an approved film, its access boundary and the support responsibilities for the chosen viewing mode.

Virtual-cinema discovery worksheet

  1. 1. Playable edition

    Ask
Which exact video and caption set is approved for this viewing?
    Evidence to request
A film edition, its approved tracks and a proposed replacement.
    Tradeoff to record
Replacing an asset in place is convenient but needs an explicit policy for existing screenings and links.
  2. 2. Audience access

    Ask
What establishes that this account can open this title now?
    Evidence to request
Fictional eligible and ineligible viewers and the agreed viewing policy.
    Tradeoff to record
The catalogue, account system and media delivery must explain compatible access states.
  3. 3. Support owner

    Ask
Who investigates a failed admission or unavailable video during the event?
    Evidence to request
The provider signals, support route and named operational responsibilities.
    Tradeoff to record
Product development does not automatically include event-day staffing or a hosting service commitment.

Rehearse the first viewing journey and its recovery

Proposed acceptance: an eligible viewer opens the intended film edition; selecting a supported track loads its expected captions, with the agreed unavailable-track fallback. After access ends, a saved player destination follows the provider-backed access rule. If hosted screenings are included, reconnecting viewers reach the intended waiting, admitted, active or ended state, and host actions affect only the intended room. These are proposed checks, not historical Inspire Film tests.

Bring the viewing experience you want to offer

Describe the intended audience, media you are authorised to publish and first viewing mode. Curiosive can deliver the agreed application and integration scope remotely from Ankara, Türkiye. Confirm hosting and event-support ownership alongside the first release.

Questions

The things people ask before starting.

Can we keep our current media provider?

We can assess its player, captions, access controls and diagnostic capabilities against the viewing journey. A focused integration may be sufficient; changing provider is not assumed.

Can we launch with on-demand viewing only?

Yes. Hosted screenings can remain outside the first scope. Acceptance should cover the selected mode rather than requiring live-room features the product does not need.

Can the platform enforce every rights restriction?

Requirements must be checked against the rights policy and provider capabilities. The implementation needs explicit acceptance; this service does not guarantee content protection or determine distribution rights.

Are subtitles and interface translations the same scope?

No. Agree available tracks for each film edition separately from interface language. The player should explain an unavailable track instead of implying it exists.

Does development include event-day support?

Only when expressly included. Name who operates screenings, handles audience questions and investigates technical incidents. Hosting costs and event staffing are not implied by the development scope.

Looking for an engineering partner for the long haul?

A short note about the product, the timeline and who it is for is enough to start. You will hear back from the engineer who would do the work, not a sales team.
