Localising a mobile app for North Macedonia: Macedonian Cyrillic

Amendment V of North Macedonia's Constitution makes Macedonian in its Cyrillic script the official language nationwide, and any other language spoken by at least 20% of citizens is also an official language. An app meant for the whole population should therefore plan for Macedonian in Cyrillic plus every language that meets that threshold, instead of an English interface with translation added after launch. In practice every string passes through a translation layer from the first screen, layouts are checked against the longest translation, and dates and numbers are formatted from the locale rather than hard-coded. Store listings, push notification copy and the text explaining each permission prompt need the same languages. Agents extract strings and generate the locale files; a person checks each language on a real device.

Two rules shape the data layer of a consumer app here. Article 12 of the Law on Personal Data Protection sets the age of digital consent at 14: for a service offered directly to a child, consent-based processing is lawful only if the child is at least 14, otherwise a holder of parental responsibility must give or authorise consent and the controller must make reasonable efforts to verify this. The Law on Electronic Communications, applicable from 1 June 2026, adds Article 198(5): storing or reading information on a user's device needs consent given after clear and comprehensive information about the purposes, with exemptions only for transmitting a communication or providing a service the user explicitly requested. Plan for analytics and attribution SDKs that write identifiers on first launch to stay idle until consent is recorded. An engineer reviews the age gate and the consent flow before each release.

Store releases for an Android-led market: Play and App Store rules

Because Android leads the mobile market in North Macedonia, Google Play rules decide whether most of your users receive an update. Since 31 August 2026, new apps and updates submitted to Play must target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher. Every Play app must complete the Data safety form, covering data collected or shared through third-party libraries and SDKs, and keep it accurate and complete; apps that do not comply face enforcement such as blocked updates or removal. Play also requires apps with account creation to offer deletion both inside the app and through a web link. On iOS, the App Store requires account deletion to start inside the app, and each upload needs a privacy manifest declaring approved reasons for every required-reason API the code uses. An engineer checks both against what the SDKs actually collect.

OneID, launched in December 2021 by KIBS with Nextsense, is an electronic identification service certified under eIDAS and the Law on Electronic Documents, Electronic Identification and Trust Services. It identifies users remotely on a mobile device at a high level of assurance against the Central Population Register, and financial institutions, telecom operators and state institutions can integrate it. If your app belongs to one of those sectors, treat the OneID handoff as part of the authentication design from the start. Apps for public-sector institutions carry a second duty: the Law on Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Institutions has applied since 1 July 2026, and active mobile apps that already existed must comply and publish an accessibility statement by 31 December 2026. The Ministry of Digital Transformation supervises compliance, so contrast and screen reader labels belong in every review.
