Android and iOS in Portugal: why one React Native codebase
With Android on roughly two of every three phones in Portugal, a native iOS app followed months later by an Android port means building the same product twice, for the smaller audience first. React Native lets both stores ship from one codebase, with Portuguese, the country's official EU language, as the base language rather than a translation added before launch. Android carries its own deadline: since 31 August 2026, new apps and updates submitted to Google Play must target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher, and existing apps must target API level 35 to stay available to new users. We set the target level at the start of the project and keep it in the release checklist. Coffict (coffict.com) and TrendinChat (trendin.chat) are React Native apps we shipped for clients in Türkiye, built the same way: one codebase, with a senior engineer reading every change before it merges.
