Alabama App Store Accountability Act: what your app has to do
The act sorts users into four age categories: under 13, 13 to 15, 16 to 17 and 18 or over. Your app reads the category the store provides, along with the parental consent status for minor accounts, and may use that data only to enforce age-related restrictions or defaults, to comply with law or to run safety features. Reusing it for analytics or ad targeting is outside that list. Developers also have to tell the app stores about significant changes: changed categories of data, new monetization such as in-app purchases or ads, or a changed age rating or content description. We put that check on the release checklist, so a pull request that adds an ads SDK or a purchase screen raises the notice. Knowing or reckless violations are deceptive trade practices that only the Attorney General may pursue, with civil penalties of up to $7,500 per violation, while a developer that relied in good faith on the store's age and consent data, and otherwise complied, is not liable.
