Localising a mobile app for Belgium's three official languages
Belgium's official EU languages are Dutch, French and German. Even if an app launches in only one or two of them, it should be built so that adding the next is a translation job rather than a refactor. We set up the translation layer before the first screen, keep user-facing strings out of the components and let agents generate the screens, tests and per-language store metadata around it, with a person checking the copy before submission. Identity is the other local decision. itsme, the Belgian digital identity app, announced on 17 March 2026 that it had passed 8 million users in Belgium, and it has been recognised at European level since December 2019 with eIDAS level of assurance high. If your users must prove who they are or sign documents, decide early whether itsme belongs in the sign-in flow, because that choice shapes the auth design.
