Colorado's app age-signal law and what it changes in your build
SB26-051 was signed on June 3, 2026. Its four brackets are under 13, 13 to under 16, 16 to under 18, and 18 or older, and a covered app must treat the signal as the primary indicator of a user's age. Some existing installs are covered too: apps last updated on or after July 1, 2027 and downloaded before July 1, 2028 must request the signal before January 1, 2029. The Attorney General can seek up to $2,500 per minor harmed for each negligent violation and $7,500 for each intentional one. In a build, we store the bracket with its source and the date it was read, request it during onboarding, and gate features on it through one module rather than checks scattered across screens. Apple's ratings point the same way: 13+, 16+ and 18+ now sit beside 4+ and 9+, and the new rating questions had to be answered by January 31, 2026 to avoid an interruption when submitting updates.
