Localising a mobile app for Moldova: Romanian, Russian and the leu
Article 13 of the Constitution makes Romanian, written in the Latin script, the state language and protects the use of Russian and other languages spoken in the country. For most consumer apps that means planning Romanian and Russian strings from the first screen rather than adding a second language after launch. Keeping copy out of components from day one lets agents generate the translation keys, the language switch and snapshot tests for each screen in both languages, so a layout that breaks in one of them is caught before review. Article 130 makes the Moldovan leu the national currency, so in-app prices, receipts and order totals should be formatted in lei. Store listings get the same treatment: agents draft the descriptions and release notes in both languages, and a person checks them before anything is submitted.
